Thursday Family Devotional
Jesus Serves His Friends
Reading: John 13:1-15; Luke 22:14-20
On Thursday night, Jesus shared a special meal with his disciples. During that meal, he did something surprising. He washed their feet.
In those days, roads were dusty, and people wore sandals. Washing feet was a servant’s job. But Jesus knelt down and washed the feet of his friends. He wanted them to understand something important: true greatness in God’s kingdom comes through being humble and serving others, treating them like they are more important than you.
Imagine a sports team where the team captain, the best player, arrives early to carry everyone’s equipment and clean the sweaty, stinky locker room for all the other players. That would be pretty surprising, wouldn’t it?
But that’s exactly what Jesus did. The greatest leader who ever lived showed how much he loved his friends by serving them…cleaning their dirty feet with his own hands. A little later on, when they were eating supper, Jesus explained that he would give up his body and blood, so that his friends’ sins could be forgiven.
The cross would be the greatest act of love, humility and sacrifice the world has ever seen. Jesus would give up his own life for you and for me.
questions
- Why did Jesus wash his disciples’ feet?
- What does that teach us about how we should treat others?
- How can we humbly serve each other this week?
prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for showing us what true love looks like. Help us follow your example by loving and serving others. In your name. Amen.
