Our Foundation Is Jesus Christ

The Four Pillars at Harvest Bible Chapel

Jesus told us to, “make disciples” (Matthew 28:19-20), but what exactly is a disciple?

At Harvest we define a disciple as someone who…

Worships Christ

Express faith in him, be baptized, make weekly worship together a priority

Walks with Christ

Spend time with him in the Word and prayer and join a group to encourage your own spiritual growth

Works for Christ

Get on a serving team and use your gifts and passions to build the church

Witnesses for Christ

Invite people to “come and see” or “go and tell” them your story and share the gospel

Harvest exists to glorify God
by making more and better followers of Jesus.

Our Leadership Team

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 1 Corinthians 12:4-7

Our History

In early 2000, Hope Community Church in Barrie had no pastor and no building of their own and was facing the prospect of shutting down the ministry after seven years. Instead, God birthed in them a new vision to partner with a church planting church to give them a fresh start.

In the months that followed, a God-ordained connection was made with leaders from Harvest Bible Chapel in Chicago, and in January 2001 the church became the core group of a new church plant, Harvest Bible Chapel Barrie. We are grateful for the “original eight” families who prayed, had the vision, and did the work to see it come to be: Terry and Ruth Ann Evans, Les and Judi Galicinski, Stewart and Faye Mathie, Gunther and Helga Podewils, Scott and Tracy Robinson, Janet Smith, Garth and Peta Taylor, Richard and Sue Thomas, and with honourable mention to Steve Gallant, who was a teen in the youth group at the time, and who continues to be a part of our Harvest family to this day.

After being recruited by Harvest Chicago in early 2001, Todd and Cheryl Dugard joined the core group with Todd becoming the founding and lead pastor and preaching his first sermon on March 25, 2001. After five months of training in Chicago, he assumed his full-time responsibilities at the church’s official launch on September 16, 2001, and he remains our lead pastor to this day.

Over the years, Harvest has gathered for worship at the Sunnidale Community Centre (now the Dorian Parker Centre), Emma King Elementary School (2001-2005), Timothy Christian School (2005-2017), and since August 2017, at our own 7 George Street facility (the former Army, Navy, Air Force Club Hall).

By God’s grace, the church grew beyond expectations, and the Lord kindly gave us a front-row seat to what he was doing. In 2002, we had the privilege of being a founding church of the newly formed Harvest Bible Fellowship, through which many planters were trained and sent out, more than a hundred churches were planted, and many people were led to faith in Christ and baptized. Sadly, after a lingering and devastating leadership crisis, our fellowship of churches disbanded in 2017 leaving us without an affiliation. We are grateful that despite human failure, the fruit of those years remains and continues to multiply.

In March 2021, after a lengthy season of internal evaluation and investigation of options for association, Harvest joined Acts 29, a diverse, global family of church-planting churches.

In the fall of 2024, we planted our first campus in the town of Alliston, what is hoped to be the first of several campuses throughout Simcoe County. This has been our heart over the twenty plus years of our history. We have had the joy and privilege of being involved in planting, coaching and supporting new churches and pastors/planters in Canada, the U.S., Scotland, Cameroon and other countries, and we have engaged in gospel-centred compassion and justice ministries locally and globally. Together with our partners, we hope to continue to make an impact for the kingdom of God here on earth until Jesus appears.

What To Expect

Service Format

Our service begins with worship, led by a band. Most people stand during this time, however, there is complete freedom to be seated if you prefer. The words of all of the songs are projected onto a screen. Our hope is that you’ll hear songs you know or can relate to, even if you haven’t been to church before.

Giving toward the ministry costs of the church is part of our worship and details ways to give can be found on this website. If you are a guest, please do not feel obligated to participate, as this is intended for those who consider Harvest their church home.

As our guest, we only ask that you take a few moments to complete the Connect Form found at hbc.info. By filling this in you can request information, ask for prayer, let us know your thoughts, or just indicate your presence with us. In any case, our church leaders pray for each of the prayer requests every week.

You won’t be asked to stand or raise your hand (or anything else embarrassing) just because you’re new. Nor will you have to recite anything or kneel at certain times during the service.

Harvest provides practical Bible messages that help you deal with real life issues. Our pastors preach from the English Standard Version, but please feel free to bring whatever version of the Bible you use.

We’ll even provide you with a handy outline with the main points and Bible verses on our microsite hbc.info. What you learn on the weekend, you’ll be able to use during the week.

AFTER THE SERVICE

Be sure to stop by the Guest Central and pick up material on any aspects of Harvest in which you may be interested. One of our pastors or leaders would love to have a chance to meet you.

WHAT TO WEAR

At Harvest Bible Chapel, we focus on the heart more than the outward appearance. When you come to one of our weekend services, you will find people dressed in a wide variety of styles from as casual as jeans or shorts, to as formal as suits and dresses.

We do ask that people wear clothing that does not draw attention to themselves. We think that what you wear to church should not detract from the worship experience of others around you. We want all of the attention to go to Christ.

What We Believe

Doctrinal Statement

We believe the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments to be the full record of God’s self-disclosure to humanity. The human authors, while writing according to their own styles and personalities, were supernaturally moved along by the Holy Spirit to record God’s very words, without error in the original writings and fully reliable in what they communicate. Those who humbly apply themselves to the study of the Scriptures, within their grammatical-historical context and various literary genres, will come to a trustworthy understanding of God’s Word and see it as the final and sufficient authority for all of life.

Psalm 19:7-112 Timothy 3:16-17Hebrews 4:122 Peter 1:20-21

We believe in the one living and true God, eternally existing in perfect unity as three equally and fully divine persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Each member of the Godhead, while executing distinct yet complementary roles in redemptive history, has precisely the same nature, attributes, and being, and is equally worthy of the same glory, honour, and obedience.

Genesis 1:1-226Isaiah 6:1-4Matthew 28:19-20Luke 3:21-22

We believe that God the Father created all things in six days through his Son, Jesus Christ, according to his will and for his glory. He upholds all things by the word of his power and grace, exercising divine providence and sovereign headship over all creation. He demonstrated his deep love for the world by sending his only Son to offer salvation to humanity.

John 3:16-176:2710:29-3017:3Romans 1:75:8Hebrews 1:3Revelation 4:11

We believe that Jesus Christ, the eternal Son, moved by love in accordance with the will of the Father, took on human flesh. Conceived through the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit, he was born of the virgin Mary. Being fully God and fully man, he lived a sinless life and sacrificially shed his blood and died on the cross in our place, accomplishing redemption for all who place their faith in him. He rose visibly and bodily from the dead on the third day and, after being seen by many witnesses, ascended into heaven. He now sits at the Father’s right hand, head of his body the Church, the only Saviour and Mediator between God and humanity, and will one day return to earth in power and glory to consummate his redemptive mission.

John 1:1-418John 14:8-11Colossians 1:15-201 Timothy 3:16Hebrews 2:17-18Revelation 19:11-16

We believe that the Holy Spirit, in all he does, glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ during this age. He convicts of sin, righteousness, and judgment. He draws the unredeemed to repentance and faith, and at salvation imparts new life to the believer, bringing the convert into union with Christ and his body, his Church. The Holy Spirit baptizes and permanently indwells at salvation, seals, sanctifies, fills, guides, instructs, comforts, equips, empowers, produces fruit as evidence of genuine faith, and confers spiritual gifts for service in the life of the believer.

John 16:813-15Acts 1:82:1-4Romans 8:9-1712:4-81 Corinthians 2:10-133:166:19-2012:4-13Galatians 5:16-25Titus 3:5

We believe that God created humanity—male and female—in his own image and likeness, free of sin, to glorify himself and to enjoy an intimate, personal, and unhindered relationship with him. Tempted by Satan, yet within the sovereign plan of God, the first man and woman freely chose to disobey God, bringing upon all people the curse of sin and death. All human beings, therefore, are sinful by nature, rebellious by choice, and under the influence of a sin-marred world and the evil one himself. Every person is alienated from God without defense or excuse, subject to his righteous wrath, and in desperate need of the Saviour to reverse the curse and restore their relationship with the Father.

Genesis 1:26-273:1-6Psalm 139:13-16Romans 1:18-203:10-19235:1218-191 Corinthians 10:31Ephesians 2:101 John 2:15-17

We believe that salvation is found in none other than Jesus Christ, who died in our place as the once-for-all substitutionary atonement for our sins. Before the foundation of the world, God chose those who would be saved based solely on his sovereign good pleasure. Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross paid for the sins of the world, fully satisfying God’s righteous wrath against sin and evil. Those who turn from sin in repentance and faith become a new creation by the Holy Spirit, are declared righteous before God, and are eternally secured as an adopted child of the Father. Genuine faith is authenticated by a growing obedience to and love for Jesus Christ, and with an evident eagerness to glorify God and persevere to the end.

Matthew 24:13John 3:16-18Acts 4:12Romans 7:15-258:29-3037-3910:9-132 Corinthians 5:21Ephesians 1:3-82:4-9Hebrews 10:10- 141 John 2:2-6

We believe that upon placing faith in the Lord Jesus, the believer is made part of the body of Christ, the one universal Church, of which Christ is the head. Additionally, believers are to assemble together for worship, prayer, teaching, fellowship, to practice the ordinances of believer’s baptism and the Lord’s Table, to serve one another through the use of spiritual gifts, and to carry out the mission to make disciples. The local church is to be led and protected by a plurality of elders who shepherd and oversee members working together in humility, love, and unity, intent on the ultimate purpose of glorifying Jesus Christ.

Matthew 28:18-20Acts 1:82:41-471 Corinthians 11:17-2912:7Ephesians 1:22-234:11-161 Timothy 3:1-7Titus 1:5-9Hebrews 10:24-2513:171 Peter 5:1-5

We believe in and expectantly await the glorious, visible, imminent, and victorious return of the Lord Jesus Christ. The blessed hope of his second coming and the culmination of God’s redemptive plan for creation and humanity have vital bearing on the believer, producing an inward assurance of salvation and an outward zeal for service and mission. We believe in the bodily resurrection of both the saved and the lost. The lost will be raised to judgment and experience eternal wrath in hell. The saved will be raised to eternal joy in the new heaven and new earth in the presence of God forever.
