Have Mercy On Me

What is mercy? In simple terms, mercy is kindness. Mercy is compassion, tender-heartedness, generosity, and it’s also forgiveness. And I am certain you’ve heard this before, mercy is not getting what you should be getting. For example, when someone commits a crime, they deserve to be punished for that crime. The punishment could be jail time, community service, or whatever the legal system sees fit. But when someone commits a crime and they receive mercy, it means their punishment will most likely not be as big as it could or should be. It may be a reduced sentence or even no sentence at all. But why is it important for us to understand mercy?

It’s important because in our text this week, in Mark 10:46-52, we’ll see a man named Bartimaeus ask for mercy from Jesus. He literally begs for it: “Have mercy on me!” It’s a plea for compassion from Jesus due to his dire situation, but it’s also a personal acknowledgement from him seeing just how much he knows he needs Jesus; he needs Jesus above anyone or anything else. Join us this Sunday as we consider just how much we desperately need to long for Jesus and his mercy.

God’s mercy is so great you may sooner drain the sea of its water, or deprive the sun of its light, or make space too narrow, than diminish the great mercy of God.
C.H. Spurgeon

When I long for Christ’s abundant mercy, I will…

…seek him relentlessly (v. 46-48)

…trust him completely (v. 49-52a)

Putting our faith in Christ is not about trying harder; it means transferring our trust away from ourselves and resting in him.
Tim Keller

…follow him passionately (v. 52b)

John 10: 27
