They Kept Silent

Bible Text: Mark 9:30-41 |
Campus:

Who is the greatest? In our text this week through Mark 9:30-41, we’ll see the disciples debating on this idea. It brings us to consider an important question: What really is true greatness?

In sports and in life, we tend to measure greatness by the achievements and successes we attain. Whether it’s through the trophies we’ve won, the bonuses and promotions we’ve earned, or the records we’ve broken. But is that really enough? For example, last Sunday, Alexander Ovechkin beat Wayne Gretzky’s 30-year-old record for goals scored in an NHL career. It’s an incredible accomplishment that places Ovechkin at the top of this category. But this is only one small area where he can claim to be the best; it doesn’t make him the greatest hockey player overall.

So, how can we appropriately measure greatness then? We need to look to God. In his character of perfection and holiness, he defines and sets the only reasonable standard for greatness. He is the greatest of all. Period. Join us on Sunday as we reflect on the greatness and excellence of our God and Saviour, Jesus.

Jeremiah 10:6

True greatness in God’s Kingdom…

…moves from death to life (v. 30-32)

The great sin of the average Christian is ignorance of the Word of God.
J. Vernon McGee

Colossians 2:13-15

…serves others humbly (v. 33-37)

Mark 10:45

The authority by which the Christian leader leads is not power but love, not force but example, not coercion but reasoned persuasion. Leaders have power, but power is safe only in the hands of those who humble themselves to serve.
John Stott
