They Watched Jesus

Have you ever caught yourself people-watching or crowd-watching? This is when you observe people’s interactions, expressions, and behaviours in public. The mall can often be a great place for this. I do this at home with my kids sometimes. I will watch my daughter as she reads a book, and then she begins rolling around the couch with a big grin across her face because something funny or exciting just happened in the story she is reading. Or I will watch my son slurping a can of pop through his straw (very loudly I might add) just to make sure he got Every. Last. Little. Drop.

Similarly, in this week’s text through Mark 2:18-3:6, we are going to see how the Pharisees watched Jesus very closely. However, they did this with the sole purpose of finding something to accuse him by. Can you believe it?! The Son of God was mere feet or inches away from them, they watched him with their own eyes, and yet they completely missed why he was there and what he was teaching them. We can often be guilty of the same thing in our own lives, though. Join us this Sunday as we continue our series through the Gospel of Mark and see how that, in Jesus, we can find all that we need.

Jesus’ new thing will be my new thing as I…

…embrace joy (2:18-22)

1 John 5:12

…enjoy freedom (2:23-28)

Exodus 20:8-11

…experience grace (3:1-6)

Our adversary does not want us to think like this. He would erase grace immediately if he could. But since he cannot, his strategy is to do everything in his power to deceive us into thinking like slaves. Why? Because when we start operating like free men and women, our old master can no longer control us. – Chuck Swindoll, The Grace Awakening
